About

Lee Park Origins

Lee Park Golf Club was founded in the early 50’s, as at that time it was extremely difficult for Jewish golfers to obtain admission to a private golf club. Consequently a group of enthusiastic Founders managed to find some land and, together with the local Jewish community, many of whom were non-golfers, purchased shares in our Club to enable the land to be bought.
These Founder members, to whom we are eternally grateful, helped to prepare the course by clearing stones and boulders, driving tractors and demolishing old walls. Sadly, there are only a few of these Founders still with us today.
Over the years many developments have taken place both on the course and in the Clubhouse, and today we have a Golf Club of which we are justly proud.
Lee Park Golf Club is also a member of the Society of Liverpool Golf Captains, one of the oldest in England being formed in 1908, and we have forged, over the years, excellent relationships with our neighbouring clubs and many further afield.
At the time of our foundation in 1954, the membership was comprised almost totally of Jewish members. Over the years, as the Jewish community has diminished in Liverpool, the profile of our members has changed, so much so that the majority of members are now non-Jewish.
Although Jewish members are in the minority, we still adhere to some of our traditions and so in accordance with our dietary laws; we do not serve pork, bacon or shellfish from the kitchen. Nor do we mix meat with milk dishes.
The Clubhouse is closed for three high Holy days in the year during September/October –Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The course is naturally never closed throughout the year, and those members wishing to play during these times take their clubs home.
There have always been first class connections between all our members, with mutual respect and understanding for each other’s beliefs. It is a proud boast that no-one has ever been refused Membership of our Club on the grounds of colour, race or creed and long may that continue.
As a progressive club we have signed up to the EGU Equal Opportunities Policy
We hope that the above information has given you some insight into the history and traditions of our Club.
